whats on whitley bay eat / play / live w o w blog news & events things to do food & drink entertainment sport & leisure pets w o w blog classic car show whitley bay this one took us a little by surprise, at about 11.30 today i had a call from a friend telling me to get my arse down to the spanish city there's a classic car show on. i quickly grabbed my camera and had a wander down. to say it wasn't really well advertised it was packed and that says a lot about the number of people that come down to this wonderful spot every weekend. it was a real treat to see some wonderful classics from europe and the usa all set out in front of the spanish city. its the little events like this that don't seem like much but they really make difference to the area. now i'm not going to witter on about all the different cars but what i will say is whether your an enthusiast or just love checking to some beautiful pieces of art you will have enjoyed today. we promise to give you plenty of notice next time its in town. in the meantime check out some four photos below and on our facebook page . whitley bay to host edinburgh fringe performers for the final week of the north tyneside festival, whitely bays very own spanish city plaza will be hosting a week long programme of events, courtesy of street entertainers fresh from the edinburgh fringe festival. there will be a range of international buskers showcasing their weird and wonderful talents with daily shows between 12 noon and 3pm, from august 24-31. if your off work or can spare an hour at lunch get yourselves down its sure to be another event not to be missed. there will be a whole host of performers from the uk / israel / usa and down under. off with the kids for the summer? they have that covered too tynemouth station will have a special activity area for children under five years between monday 24 and friday, august 28 with sessions taking place at 10am and 11.15am every day. its events like this which is why i love our little town. and don't forget the proper food & drink fest is back in north tyneside on the 29th-30th august - definitely not to be missed. tynemouth outdoor pool - needs you! i've passed the pool on many occasion, i've even used it as a derelict backdrop for some stunning sunrise photographs but like many of you i'm guilty of ignoring what it once was and what it could soon be again if something is done about it. well there is something being done, there is a group working furiously to get this local landmark returned to its former glory and beyond. the friends of tynemouth outdoor pool are aiming to transform the 'rockpool' at the end of longhands beach into a modern, safe, usable and internationally significant leisure facility. the only thing that surprises me is that this wasn't picked up in the £36million coastal regeneration. this isn't a small group either this is a very well organised community group that formed in august 2012 that are now on track to raise the funding for stage 2 of one of the biggest community driven regeneration projects the uk has ever seen. what could the pool look like? as you know things can change and nothing is set in stone but i've picked a couple of images that i really like and throw in the possibility of geothermal heating keeping it warm all year round and my wardrobe could end up being 50% speedos. whatever happens with our community and the friends of tynemouth pool behind this its sure to be a significant landmark for the future of our coast. how can you help? we all 'want' changes to happen in our local area but it always takes that one individual or group to get the ball rolling and convince people that it can happen rather than waiting for somebody else to do it. and that ladies and gents is exactly whats happening here . so far all of this has been done with fundraising events but as things progress more money will be needed to complete each stage . how much is the big question, its estimated at around £5.5million in total to finish the project with an expected £1.2million from trusts and grants and £500k from local business contributions. the really exciting part for me is the community shares , these are genuine shares for small investments that could bring you a return on your investment but most importantly remind you that you played a part in returning this to tynemouth. so get involved and sign up to be a member to show your support. you can also buy some of this sexy merch and sow your support publicly (i'm ordering a hoodie as soon as its back in stock). latest plans for whitley bays £36million seafront regeneration unless you've said goodbye to all technology or you've been living in a cave for the past year everybody will have heard some of the news and plans for whitley bays seafront regeneration. well north tyneside council have now released the latest updates and we are going to give you a quick rundown of the major changes we can expect. we would love to hear your thoughts and comments on the proposals. 1. st mary's lighthouse we all love this place and there have been some controversial proposals in the past, most notably removing the license of the current long standing and very popular ice cream vendor. well the latest proposals seem to have moved the proposed £1million cafe from the carpark over the causeway right on the island itself. im not sure how i feel about this but providing they can design it so as not to detract from the historic beauty of the lighthouse then i'm open to it. on the up side much needed repairs to the causeway are planned (no apparent concern for the heavily deteriorated handrail on the promenade though!). and this august for 4days they are trailing a new land train from the spanish city to lighthouse choo choo! 2. mini golf & coastal path within the general plans are improvement works to the mini golf course and reinstatement of the eroded coastal path from the brierdene to the lighthouse. now this i can get behind easy to do and will improve the facilities in the area for residents and visitors. 3. blyth style beach huts & retail units yes you heard that right, theres a proposal thats making ground to provide overnight beach huts and new retail units on the northern promenade. there are two options for the retail units, either demolish the existing shelter and replace with pod like retail units or renovate it to include the units. i would prefer to see the existing improved rather than removed but we'll see how realistic that is with time. there are also aspirations for day stay beach huts which i think are a great idea for families visiting for the day a great place to dry off the kids and get a brew. one thing i can't get my head around is the overnight huts before day huts, surely they would be more popular? 4. rendezvous cafe area i love this place it has a great deal of charm and really makes you feel your at a traditional seaside resort (thats a good thing). its ideally situated on a great stretch of beach and its great to drop in for an ice cream of coffee. thankfully the improvement works to the cafe are simply much needed maintenance and a lick of paint. the rest of the area including the toilet facilities, carpark and promenade will see the bulk of the works with new toilet and shower facilities leaving this quaint cafe just as it should be. 5. outdoor gym! i'm yet to be 100% sold on this, i think its a great idea in principle but i've no idea how this will work. the proposals are for distance markers along the promenade for runners, improved signage and a combination of static and jointed gym equipment at 2 locations along the seafront. will this equipment be used or will it be just left to deteriorate? for me the location and type of equipment will be key. could this be the muscle beach of the north east! 6. watts slope phase 1 of watts slope is already underway with the former boardwalk cafe demolished and a new temporary pop up unit installed along with some seating an
